NORMAN, Okla. – Iowa State freshman women's golfer Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn is ranked fifth in the final Arnold Palmer Cup International Rankings for the 2023 matches, earning her a spot on the team.
Chul-Ak-Sorn is one of four Big 12 golfers selected, with all four being on the international teams. Along with the two men's players, she joins Big 12 Champion Maddison Hinson-Tolchard from Oklahoma State on the women's side.
Putting together one of the best seasons in Iowa State history, Chul-Ak-Sorn has six top-five finishes on the year. She finished fifth at last week's Big 12 Championship, while she won the Mountain View Intercollegiate in record-setting fashion. Her 191 over 54-holes tied the NCAA record at 25-under par. Her 62 in the second round was the lowest score in Iowa State history and just the 12th round in NCAA women's golf history of 61 or 62.
Chul-Ak-Sorn is the first player from Iowa State women's golf to be selected to the Palmer Cup in program history. Former Cyclone Scott Fernandez was selected from the men's team in 2013.
The top six golfers from the final ranking from both the United States and International rankings make up the individuals selected to compete in the Palmer Cup. Longtime Arnold Palmer partner Rolex is continuing its 50-plus year relationship through its support of the matches, which will be hosted by Laurel Valley Golf Club June 8-10.Â
Using Golfstat's NCAA Player Ranking as a base, the Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a penalty for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component.
The remaining six spots for the United States will consist of five committee picks, including at least one non-Division I golfer, and a coaches pick. The balance of the International team also includes five committee selections, including at least one representative from The R&A Student Tour Series, and a coaches pick.
The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) and began at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge, Orlando, Fla., in 1997. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men's and women's university/college golfers matching the United States against a team of International players. The Palmer Cup has been played at some of the world's greatest courses, including The Old Course at St. Andrews, The Royal County Down, Royal Portrush, Baltusrol, The Honors Course, and Cherry Hills. Beginning with the 2018 matches at Evian Resort Golf Club, the Palmer Cup is the only major tournament which features men and women playing side-by-side as partners.
