AMES, Iowa – Iowa State has selected Mike Green to lead the Iowa State Letterwinners Club following the departure later this month of Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete & Letterwinners Engagement Lindsey Long, who will join the ISU Foundation staff as a Senior Director of Donor Relations on June 23.
"There is likely no one who knows the history of Iowa State Athletics better than Mike Green, and I look forward to watching him lead and continue to grow the ISU Letterwinners Club," said ISU Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard. "Mike's more than quarter century of service to Cyclone Athletics will serve him well in his new role with the department."
Green began his Iowa State athletics career in 1995 as a graduate student in the athletic communications office. He was hired full-time in 1997 after earning his master's degree in exercise and sports science from Iowa State and spent 27 years as a communications specialist for Cyclone athletics, directing publicity efforts for many programs, including wrestling, golf, volleyball, baseball, men's basketball and football.
He was promoted to ISU's Assistant Athletics Director for Communications in 2013, a position he held for nine years. Under Green's direction, the ISU Athletics Communications office received many awards, including twice earning Super 11 honors from the Football Writers Association of America in recognition of outstanding service to the media.
In 2022, Green accepted a new role as Director of Traditions for the ISU Letterwinners Club where he continued to capture stories and promote the legacy of Iowa State's rich athletic tradition. He created an ISU Letterwinners blog "Forever True" and enhanced the documentation and selection process for the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame, letter award traditions and supporting all areas that invite and welcome former Cyclones back to campus.
A former Cyclone soccer letterwinner (1999-2003), Long was hired as the Director of the ISU Letterwinners Club and Special Events in 2012. Through her efforts, the ISU Letterwinners Club enjoyed tremendous growth through outreach and engagement. Overseeing annual reunions, the ISU Athletics Hall of Fame and implementing ticket benefits, Long was responsible for reengaging countless former Cyclone student-athletes. She also developed and maintained the ISU letterwinner database, increased visibility and access to ISU alumni, and oversaw the expansion of the department's annual Cy's House of Trivia into the 100-table event it is today.
"For the last 12 years, Lindsey Long has done a tremendous job in connecting with current and former student-athletes and providing strong leadership to the ISU Letterwinners Club," Pollard said. "She has created many memorable experiences during her time that have allowed our department to celebrate many great Cyclones and their achievements, while working hard to increase the organization's engagement and visibility."
A double Iowa State graduate (2003 B.S., 2016 M.E.), Long was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athletes and Letterwinners Engagement in 2019 and led the merger of the ISU Letterwinners Club and the department's Student Affairs division. In that role, she was responsible for enhancing the Cyclone student-athletes experience, directing efforts in service-learning initiatives, student-athlete award celebrations, the ISU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and resume building. Long developed new curriculum and taught classes for student-athletes to support their acclimation into college and preparation for life after college.
"Lindsey has been an invaluable leader of the ISU Letterwinners Club," said ISU Senior Associate Athletics Director Shamaree Brown. "As a former Cyclone letterwinner herself, her passion for engaging athletic alumni with current student-athletes and creating memorable experiences has helped increase the engagement level within the ISU Letterwinners Club, which has led to an increase in membership and donations to the organization."
