The Lead
No. 8 Iowa State completed its third season under head coach T.J. Otzelberger with a 29-8 overall record and 13-5 Big 12 record. Iowa State won the Big 12 Championship for the fifth time in the last 10 tournaments, while advancing to the seventh Sweet 16 in program history. The 29 victories are the second-most in program history, while the 37 games played are tied for the most. The Cyclones appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the 23rd time in program history.
Key Storylines
-The Cyclones picked up wins over No. 15 seed South Dakota State (82-65) and No. 7 seed Washington State (67-56) to advance to the seventh Sweet 16 in program history. Iowa State dropped a 72-69 decision to No. 3 seed Illinois in the Sweet 16.
-Iowa State cruised to the Big 12 Championship, winning all three games by an average of 20.3 points. Those wins included two over top 15 teams. Keshon Gilbert was named the Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player, while Tamin Lipsey and Milan Momcilovic were named to the All-Championship Team.
-A trio of Cyclones earned honors from the Big 12. Lipsey was an All-Big 12 First Team selection, while Gilbert was named to the second team. Lipsey was a unanimous selection to the All-Defensive Team, while Gilbert was named to the All-Newcomer Team. Momcilovic was named to the All-Freshman Team.
-Iowa State has won 18-straight games at Hilton Coliseum, the fourth longest active home winning streak in the country. ISU, McNeese and Samford are the only undefeated teams in the country at home with at least 18 wins.
-Iowa State is 31-1 under T.J. Otzelberger when four or more players score in double figures.Â
-Lipsey had a school-record steal streak of 34-straight games snapped this season. It was the second longest streak in the country. He has a steal in 66 of the 69 games he has played.
-The six highest scoring Cyclone outputs under Otzelberger have all come this season, including a pair of 100 point performances. Nine of the 10 highest under Otz have also come this season.
-The Cyclones scored 90 or more points six times this season. It is the most times hitting that mark in a season since  the 2016-17 team did so eight times.
-Under Otz, ISU is 37-8 against non-con opponents. The 37 wins are tied for the seventh-most in the nation and the .822 winning percentage is the sixth-best.Â
-Only four players in the country averaged at least 12.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game this season. Two of them resided in the Cyclone backcourt in Tamin Lipsey and Keshon Gilbert, with ISU being the only school in the nation with multiple players hitting those marks.
-Otzelberger was named one of four finalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year. Last season, Otzelberger made it on to the late season watch list of 15.
-Lipsey averaged 12.4 points, 4.9 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 2.7 steals this year. He is one of 17 players in the country to average those numbers since 1996-97. Lipsey earned ESPN Events Invitational All-Tournament honors and turned in the seventh triple-double in school history against DePaul. Against Prairie View A&M, he broke the school record for steals in a game with eight. He was named to the Naismith National Player of the Year Midseason Team and a finalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, while earning NABC All-District 8 First Team honors and AP Honorable Mention All-America honors.
-One of the nation's toughest venues, ISU played 18 games in Hilton Coliseum this year. In its 53rd year, Iowa State owns a .748 winning percentage and picked up its 600th win in the venue Dec. 7 against Iowa. ISU's 18 wins at Hilton this season are tied for the most home wins in school history in a season.
