DES MOINES, Iowa – Dana Feyen highlighted the day with a dominant victory in the 10,000m to wave the flag as the Cyclones continued the Drake Relays.
Feyen's victory of 33:51.54 ended day two on a high note to take her first-career Drake Relays title. It is the first women's 10K Drake Relays title for Iowa State. A trio of Cyclones raced in the lead pack with Taylor Briggs and Brenna Cohoon pacing the field through 5K. Dana Feyen then ran behind Tulsa's Chloe Hershenow before taking over the lead 7,000m in. The duo remained together until three laps remained, where Feyen broke away to seal the win by 25 seconds.
Peter Smith kicked off running events with the victory in the 1,500-meter with a personal record of 3:42.32. Smith gradually built himself up the pack, clocking a final 400m of 55.21 to pass four in the final lap. Levi Taylor also hit a personal best with 3:49.59 for ninth.
In the women's 1,500m, Madelynn Hill came .93 seconds off the win while posting a five-second PR to tie the 10th-fastest performance in school history with 4:20.98. Hill also set a top-10 ranked time in the 5,000m this outdoor season. The Cyclones placed second through fourth as Ashlyn Keeney clocked 4:21.93, .12 seconds off her PR, and Bella Heikes cut three seconds off her previous best with 4:22.10.
Tyler Carreon pushed to the finish line in the final straight, coming away with the 800m win by .05 seconds clocking 1:49.12. Devan Kipyego raced in his first collegiate 800m finishing in 1:51.04 for sixth while Emanuel Galdino crossed the line right after with 1:51.17.
Multi-event athletes continued competing in heptathlon events. Sydney Willits competed in the heptathlon long jump, winning the event on her first jump with a leap of 20-6 1/2w (6.26m) at a wind reading of 4.0 m/s. The mark is a season best. Kiersten Fisher claimed fifth with 18-7 (5.66m).
Kailynn Gubbels finished the javelin leading ISU with 107-8 (32.82m) for seventh overall, while Fisher threw a personal best of 99-4 (30.29m).
Iowa State continues the Drake Relays tomorrow for day three beginning at 10:39 a.m. with the women's 4x1,600m relay.
