CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Iowa State (5-1, 0-0 Big 12) faced its first setback of the season dropping the match in four sets to UNI (3-3, 0-0 MVC). Set scores stood at 20-25, 28-26, 19-25, 19-25.
Iowa State had eight aces on the night, led by Rachel Van Gorp with three. Van Gorp also led the Cyclones with 13 digs, her 11th match in a row with 10 or more. Freshman Alea Goolsby also had double figure digs with 10.
Maya Duckworth had her second-straight match with 10-plus kills totaling 12, now standing one match away from entering the ISU top 10 in career double figure kill matches with 52. Lilly Wachholz also had 12 (.370 hitting), while Tierney Jackson rounded out Cyclones with 10-plus with 11 (.333 hitting).
Pam McCune was her efficient self hitting an errorless nine on 12 attempts for a hitting percentage of .750.
SET ONE
Van Gorp quieted the home crowd serving up back-to-back aces, while UNI answered with a 3-0 run to flip the lead at 5-4. The Panthers used another run to go up 11-6, causing an ISU timeout. Goolsby ended the run out of the timeout, then stepped to the service line with Duckworth proceeding to put down a kill. ISU kept it close, but late in the set UNI broke away to hand ISU its first set loss of the season at 25-20. UNI totaled zero attack errors in the set.
SET TWO
McCune put down her fourth kill on four attempts to knot things at 9s, but the Cyclones could not flip the lead as UNI held the 15-11 advantage at the media timeout. After falling behind 17-13, ISU went on it way to tie the score at 17s as Ava Martin capped the run with two-straight aces. After a successful UNI challenge that flipped the score from 19-18, ISU to 19-18, UNI, a battle broke out with five ties and four ISU set points. Iowa State never let up, taking the extended set 28-26 following a McCune kill and a Duckworth ace.
SET THREE
Northern Iowa pulled ahead 13-8 as ISU called its first timeout of the set, and the Panthers kept control on their way to building an eight-point lead at 18-10. Duckworth hit kill No. 10 to stop UNI's run, while ISU drew within five deep into the set, but the Panthers again took the match lead at 25-19.
SET FOUR
Iowa State won a long rally to draw within three at 8-5, while Wachholz kept ISU in it with a run of two kills and a block to tie it at 11. UNI responded running ahead 17-13, causing an Iowa State timeout. Iowa State fought off one set point, but UNI won the match with a fourth set score of 25-19 outhitting Iowa State .403-.280 on the night.
