Chris Williams rejoined the Iowa State tennis coaching staff in 2013 as an associate head coach. Williams was an assistant coach for the Cyclones from 2008-10 after serving as a volunteer coach for the program in 2007-08.
Since returning to Ames, ISU has defeated Big 12 foe West Virginia three times and earned conference road wins in back-to-back seasons. The Cyclones continue to make strides in the right direction, with multiple event champions in the fall of 2015.
The 2015-16 Cyclone squad posted a winning record (14-10) for the first time in 29 years and saw Liza Buss become the third Cyclone to earn All-Big 12 honors. Buss was also named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.
The Cyclones' doubles teams have continued to improve recently, with the top-two tandems both posting more than 20 wins, which ranked the players among the top-10 in school history.
Nine Cyclones also earned spots on the Academic All-Big 12 teams since 2013-14.
Williams served as head coach of the Bradley women’s tennis team in 2012-13, helping the Braves to their best win total in 20 years. Under his guidance, Bradley won nine matches in 2012-13 after going just 4-19 the previous season. Prior to Bradley, Williams spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the men’s program at Air Force.
During his first tenure in Ames, Williams helped Iowa State to a number of milestones. The Cyclones reached No. 66 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll during the 2009-10 season. He helped bolster the recruiting efforts as Iowa State landed Mexico’s top-ranked player in Maria Fernanda Macedo and top-10 Canadian prep Marie-Christine Chartier as well as four of the top-100 U.S. players.
Williams also served as head coach at his alma mater, Buena Vista, in 2004 after earning his bachelor’s degree in sports and fitness management. He played tennis for the Beavers and teamed with Nate Stuck to win the 2002 Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title at No. 2 doubles.
Williams and his wife, Nikki, have a daughter, Reese, and son, Leo.
