AMES, Iowa - Iowa State celebrates the 40th anniversary of the first basketball game in Hilton Coliseum today. On Dec. 2, 1971, the beautiful structure opened its doors for the first time as a capacity crowd watched the Cyclone men's basketball team defeat Arizona, 71-54.
Through the years, the arena has gained a reputation nationally. The term "Hilton Magic" has resonated with college basketball fans everywhere, and the loyal Iowa State fanbase has created an electric environment for the home team.
Iowa State radio color analyst Eric Heft, who is now in his 33rd season broadcasting Cyclone men's hoops, was a sophomore for the Cyclones on opening night. He's witnessed nearly 90 percent of the men's basketball games competed in the building, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
"Some of the best memories in my life have come in that building," Heft said. "When we first started practicing in there it was like, 'wow, this place huge.' The place was sold out for the Arizona game and we doubled the capacity of season tickets from the season before. We didn't have all the fanfare you have today, but it was packed. It was my first game and Maury John's first game as the head Cyclone coach as well."
Iowa State has racked up a 449-163 record in Hilton Coliseum, including undefeated marks in 1985-86 (13-0), 1992-93 (16-0), 1999-2000 (18-0) and 2000-01 (16-0). The Facility has seen a lot of big Cyclone victories within its walls.
"You have to remember that Hilton was considered a palace when it was first built," Heft said. "It was spacious and the amenities were great for its time. People will argue that whatever they have is the best. But for a basketball arena, there isn't anything better than Hilton. It still looks great today."
