AMES, Iowa – Iowa State made a late rally but it ultimately fell short as the Cyclones lost to Kansas State, 31-26, Saturday afternoon at Jack Trice Stadium. The Cyclones fall to 1-7 overall and 0-5 in Big 12 play, while Kansas State improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in league action.
Keys of the Game
After cutting the Kansas State lead to 31-17, Iowa State got a stop and had four plays from inside the one. The Cyclones were unable to convert on the four opportunities, with the last coming as Park was unable to connect with David Montgomery in the end zone.
The Cyclone defense gave ISU another opportunity as Kane Seeley stopped Charles Jones in the end zone for a safety, cutting the lead to 31-19. The Cyclones marched the ball down to the K-State 22, but a sack on third down put them in a hole and they were unable to convert.
The Cyclones had one more opportunity following a defensive stop as Deshaunte Jones' second receiving touchdown of the game trimmed the K-State lead to 31-26 with 51 seconds left. ISU ended up recovering the onside kick, but it was negated when Cole Netten made the recovery a yard before it reached the 10-yard minimum.
K-State held a 17-3 edge at the half but the Cyclones used a little trickery to open the second half as Chris Francis kicked and recovered an onside kick. Iowa State's first touchdown of the game came on the ensuing drive as Jacob Park found Jones for a 24-yard touchdown reception to trim the lead to 17-10 with 12:08 left in the third quarter.
K-State went on to score the next two touchdowns and the Cyclones were scrambling to come from behind the rest of the way.
The Cyclones gained 154 yards on the ground, the most by a Kansas State opponent this season. Joel Lanning led the way with 74 rushing yards.
