AMES, Iowa – The No. 20 Iowa State men's basketball team (3-0 overall) put together a dominant 130-63 victory over The Citadel (2-2 overall) on Sunday at Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State's 130 points are the most scored in a single game in school history.
Preseason All-American Monté Morris put together the fifth triple-double in school history in the win, amassing 17 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds with no turnovers in just 22 minutes of action. Nazareth Mitrou-Long scored a game-high 26 points, tying a career high, to lead eight Cyclones in double-figures.
How it Happened
Iowa State came out and blitzed the Bulldogs from the opening tip, taking a 12-0 lead just over three minutes into the game. Matt Thomas keyed the flurry with eight points on his own, including a pair of triples. The senior from Onalaska, Wisconsin, was unstoppable in the early going, outscoring the Bulldogs 14-6 by himself in the first 5:09 of the game while making 5-of-5 from the field.
The offensive onslaught continued throughout the opening period, including an 18-0 Cyclone run to give ISU a 47-15 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the half. Senior forward Darrell Bowie scored six points during the stretch and also dished out three assists in the half. In total, the Cyclones piled up a 62-22 advantage after 20 minutes of play while racking up 17 assists and just two turnovers.
The defense held The Citadel to just 7-of-40 on field goal attempts and seven turnovers in the period. Thomas led Iowa State with 14 points in the half, followed by Mitrou-Long with 11.
The second half was more of the same, with much of the damage done by the Cyclone bench crew. In total, 10 Cyclones played at least 14 minutes. Mitrou-Long led Iowa State in the second half, pouring in 15 points.
Iowa State held The Citadel to .273 percent shooting from the field, the lowest opponent shooting percentage for Iowa State since Nov. 12, 2012 vs Alabama A&M (.269).
Players of Note
Monté Morris was sensational once again, recording the fifth triple-double in school history with 17 points, 10 assists, 10 rebounds and no turnovers. The senior guard accomplished the feat in just 22 minutes of game action while shooting 8-of-12 from the floor.
Nazareth Mitrou-Long was 11-of-19 from the field for 26 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
Matt Thomas splashed home an efficient 18 points while making 6-of-9 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 3-point attempts.
Darrell Bowie recorded his first double-double of the season, and the third of his career, with 13 points and 10 boards.

*Attendance at tonight's contest was 14,228.
*ISU's 62 first-half points were its most in an opening stanza since Nov. 26, 1999 (63 at Hawaii-Hilo).
*ISU's 68 second-half points were its most since Dec. 31, 1991 (76 vs. Omaha).
*Monté Morris' triple-double included a career-high 10 rebounds for the senior guard.
*With two steals Monté Morris is now 6th all-time in steals (178), passing Will Blalock (177) and Jamaal Tinsley (177).
*Matt Thomas has now made a 3-pointer in 28 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in school history.
