AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (8-3) ended its non-conference portion of the schedule with an 88-60 victory over Mississippi Valley State (0-12) Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
Matt Thomas was one of three Cyclones in double-figuring scoring, tallying a career-high 23 points (9-14 FG, 3-7 3FG). He also grabbed eight boards. Naz Mitrou-Long remained hot, scoring 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting from downtown. He's now 14-of-21 from 3-point range in his last two games.
Thomas and Mitrou-Long helped the Cyclones make 50 percent of their shots from downtown (13-of-26).
The Cyclones shot 57.1 percent from the field, the fourth time making 50 percent or better on the season. ISU also owned the glass, outrebounding the Delta Devils, 43-28.
How it Happened
Iowa State led 44-35 at the break. The Cyclones jumped out to an early 13-point lead, but a slew of turnovers allowed the Delta Devils to take a 25-24 lead with 7:09 left in the opening period. The Cyclones had 11 turnovers at the break.
Thomas had 14 first-half points, including 12 of ISU's last 15 to end the half.
A 13-2 run by the Cyclones midway through the second half gave ISU a 70-51 advantage with 7:30 left in the game. ISU never looked back the rest of the way.
Players of Note
Naz Mitrou-Long continued his hot streak by pouring in 6-of-9 3-pointers en route to 19 points. Mitrou-Long, who is 14-of-21 from downtown in his last two games, moved past Georges Niang to No. 4 on ISU's career 3-pointers made list with 192.
Matt Thomas led the Cyclones with a career-high 23 points, the third 20-point scoring effort of his career. He scored 12 of ISU's last 15 points to close the first half to help the Cyclones go into the break with a 44-35 lead. Thomas has hit two or more (three tonight) 3-pointers in five-straight games.
