AMES, Iowa - Iowa State director of track and field and cross country Martin Smith announced the Cyclones' schedule for the 2016 cross country season on Thursday. This season's slate includes four regular season stops, in addition to Big 12 and NCAA postseason meets.
The Cyclones open up the season in Iowa City at the Hawkeye Early Bird Invitational on Sept. 2. The meet, hosted by Iowa, will be held at Ashton Cross Country Course.Â
Iowa State will then head to Minneapolis, Minn. for the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 24. The Griak, an annual event for the Cyclone cross country program, will have added significance this year. Smith, who has helped guide his teams to seven Griak titles during his career, will be inducted into the Roy Griak Invitational Hall of Fame, along with seven others at the 2016 meet.
Iowa State will then travel back to Iowa City for the NCAA Regional Preview on Oct. 1. The meet will give the Cyclones an added chance to run at Ashton Cross Country Course, the site of the 2016 NCAA Midwest Regional. The Cyclone men and women will then once again close the regular season in Madison, Wisconsin at the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational on Oct. 14.
Postseason action will begin on Oct. 29 in Lubbock, Texas, where the Cyclones will compete at the 2016 Big 12 Championship. The NCAA Midwest Regional, held on Nov. 11, marks the NCAA qualifier on both the individual and team levels. The regional meet will be Iowa State's third trip of the season to Ashton Cross Country Course in Iowa City.
The Cyclones will look to wrap up the year in Terre Haute, Indiana. at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. The national meet will take place Nov. 19 at Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
