AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team announced its spring volleyball schedule Friday. The slate features a pair of matches against a couple of the Big Ten's top squads, a home tournament at Hilton Coliseum and a tournament at UNI.
Iowa State opens the competition portion of its spring schedule on Saturday, April 8, at the UNI Spring Play Date at the Wellness/Recreation Center in Cedar Falls. The tournament begins at 9 a.m., and admission is free. The tournament schedule, which will be announced closer to the competition, could feature matches against Drake, Iowa, Northern Illinois, hosts UNI, Western Illinois, Winona State and the Iowa Ice of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL).
The Cyclones lone appearance in Hilton Coliseum for Spring 2017 comes on Saturday, April 15, when ISU hosts the Iowa State Volleyball Spring Tournament. Admission is free, doors open to the public at 9:30 a.m. and competition starts at 10 a.m. The full schedule for the tournament is below:
Court 1 (Hilton East)
10 a.m. – Iowa State vs. Omaha
11:15 a.m. – Iowa State vs. North Dakota
1:30 p.m. – Iowa State vs. UNI
Court 2 (Hilton West)
10 a.m. – UNI vs. North Dakota
11:15 a .m. – UNI vs. Omaha
1:30 p.m. – Omaha vs. North Dakota
ISU will close out the spring schedule with matches on consecutive days on April 21 and 22. Friday, the 21st, will see Iowa State travel to Manchester, Iowa to take on the Wisconsin Badgers at West Delaware High School at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the 22nd, the Cyclones make the trip to the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers at 2:30 p.m. The two Big Ten squads are coming off big seasons, UW going to the Regional Final and UMN returning to the National Semifinals.
Head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch and her Cyclones are coming off their 11th-straight NCAA Volleyball Championship appearance, finishing with an 18-11 record. Iowa State returns nine letterwinners, led by AVCA Honorable Mention All-America outside hitter Jess Schaben. Other notable returnees include All-Big 12 Second Team honorees Grace Lazard and Samara West, Big 12 All-Freshman Team libero Hali Hillegas and 2015 All-Big 12 First Team middle blocker Alexis Conaway.
The 2017 Spring season will give fans the chance to see a trio of Cyclone newcomers in transfers Hannah Cherry and Josie Herbst, and incoming freshman Piper Mauck.
