DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State picked up its first victory flag of the weekend as Jhoanmy Luque's win in the women's long jump highlighted Friday at the Drake Relays. The day featured plenty of action, both during the day and under the lights, as the Cyclones battled cold temperatures, high winds and the rain throughout the day at Drake Stadium.
To go with Luque's win, ISU got a pair of runner-up finishes in the 4x800 relays, and got a pair of top-eight finishes in the javelin.
The Iowa State long jumpers battled through an adversity-filled morning, as the cold, rains and winds were relentless. However, Jhoanmy Luque made sure her presence was known as she kicked off the competition with her winning jump of 20-1. The first three rounds were good for Allanah McCorkle, as she recorded jumps of 19-1 1/2, 19-2 1/2 and 19-6 1/4, respectively, to move herself into third place for the day.
The women's 4x800 was a battle between Big 12 teams, as Iowa State and Oklahoma State were the highlights of the field and they delivered with stellar performances. While the Cowgirls were able to pull away late to get the win, the Cyclones' quartet of Larkin Chapman, Erinn Stenman-Fahey, Evelyne Guay and Jasmine Staebler came home second in 8:41.10. The time is ISU's fastest in the event since an 8:35.36 at the 1978 AIAW Championships.
It was a Cy-Hawk battle in the 4x800. Within the first 400-meters, the two in-state foes separated themselves from the pack, making for a dramatic battle. After strong runs by Dan Curts and Zach Black, Roshon Roomes gave ISU a slight lead, handing off to Jaymes Dennison. However, Iowa's All-American Carter Lilly dropped a sub-1:50 final 800 to push the Hawkeyes in front and ahead of ISU. The Cyclones' 7:25.86 makes them the fifth-fastest 4x800 in ISU history.
Trey Achteroff had a big first throw of 185-10 to get into the final. However, the cold and rain of the competition made it a challenge for the competitors, and after a fourth-throw of 181-8, the Cyclone senior passed on his final two efforts, content with his fifth-place finish.
