SACRAMENTO, California – Former Iowa State All-American and U.S. Olympian Hillary Bor will be representing Team USA again this summer as he qualified for the 2017 World Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Bor obtained his accomplishment with a third-place finish in the steeplechase at the USATF Outdoor Championships in Sacramento this past weekend.
With 200 to go, five-time defending champion Evan Jagar began to pull away for a sixth-straight national championship, leaving behind a three-man battle for the final two slots at the World Championships. The homestretch saw Stanley Kebenei get some breathing room for second, making it Bor vs. Andy Bayer for third. Bor had the edge over the final barrier, and was able to hold off a diving Bayer at the line. Bor crossed in 8:18.83 compared to Bayer's 8:18.90.
In the 10 months since finishing eighth at the Olympic Games, Bor's career has taken a big jump. At the Diamond League meeting in Brussels, Belgium last September, Bor posted an nine-second personal best with a 8:13.68. In 2017 it has been more of the same, as he has dropped his career-best mar down to 8:11.82 which he ran at the Diamond League Rome. Bor's mark of 8:11.82 ranks him No. 7 in the world this year, and as the top American currently in the world rankings.
Bor, a native Kenyan who became an American citizen after enlisting in the U.S. Army, made his Team USA debut at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Sgt. Bor trains has part of the U.S. World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) in Fort Collins, Colorado. At ISU, Bor was a four-time All-American in the steeplechase, including a runner-up finish at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships, and a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American.
The IAAF World Championships will take place at the Olympic Stadium in London, United Kingdom from Aug. 4-13. The heats of the 3,000-meter steeplechase will take place on Aug. 6 at 4:05 a.m. Central Time, with Bor aiming to get into the final that will take place on Aug. 8 at 3:10 p.m. Central Time.
