WATERLOO, Iowa – The past and future of Iowa State wrestling was well represented at the 2017 Glen Brand Hall of Fame Awards. The 1987 national championship team, Trent and Travis Paulson and Marcus Coleman were all recognized.
The 1987 national championship team was one of the greatest squads to ever win an NCAA crown. It featured six total All Americans and five national finalists. Bill Kelly (126), Tim Krieger (150), Stewart Carter (158) and Eric Voelker (190) all won individual titles, Kevin Jackson took runner-up honors at 167 pounds and Jeff Gibbons was the third-place finisher at 134 pounds.
That team also won a share of the Big 8 Championship with Oklahoma State, producing five individual champions, which tied for second most all-time in school history.
Jim Gibbon's team wrestled to a 14-3 dual mark that year. The Cyclones outscored opponents 500-195, and had six duals in which they scored 35 or more points.
The Paulson twins were also inducted to the Hall of Fame. During their Iowa State tenure, the Paulson's were a two-headed monster at 157 and 165 pounds. Each was a three-time All American, and Trent was the 157-pound national champion in 2007.
Together, the two Council Bluffs, Iowa, natives racked up 223 career victories. They both own an individual Big 12 title, and steered Iowa State to the 2007 Big 12 Championship team title.
Coleman was recognized as the 2017 Bob Steenlage Iowa High School Wrestler of the Year. In his senior campaign, he compiled a record of 41-0 and rolled to his third-straight state title. At the state tournament, he tallied four bonus-point victories, including a 22-7 technical fall in the 170-pound championship match. Coleman will be a freshman in 2017, projecting to wrestle at 165-174 pounds.
