AMES, Iowa – No. 12 Iowa State improved to 4-0 on the season with a 195.450-194.975 victory over No. 10 Arizona Friday night at Hilton Coliseum. This is the second week in a row that Iowa State has beaten a ranked opponent, after taking down a pair last weekend.
"To be able to do this now at the beginning of the season, while still making some mistakes that will be fix is incredibly encouraging," head coach Jay Ronayne said. "They have worked so hard, and are so focused, and it is awesome that this stuff is happening for them. This is validation for all the hard work and this is really exciting to watch."
Uneven Bars
The uneven bars were the second event the Cyclones participated in tonight, with ISU going for a 48.950. Meaghan Sievers led the way with a score of 9.875. Hilary Green and Laura Burns both scored 9.800. Burns shattered her career-high tonight previously scoring a 9.725 on bars. Haylee Young scored a 9.775 for the Cyclones, while Kelsey Paz scored a 9.700, and Madeline Johnson scored a 9.625.
Sophomore Laura Burns:
"I had a mess up on my dismount last week, but then I thought about all of the numbers we've done in the gym, my teammates support, and that made me confident to get it done."
Floor Exercise
The Cyclones finished on floor with a score of 48.925. Haylee Young earned a 9.850 electrifying the crowd during her routine. Kelsey Paz continued to be a key piece in the lineup as she scored a 9.825. Meaghan Sievers bounded back from last weekend's meet scoring a 9.800. Briana Ledesma finished with a solid 9.775 score. Freshman Ariana Orrego scored a 9.675 to open the event and Natalia Ros Vaquer scored a 9.600 in her first career event.
Senior Haylee Young:
"I was thinking about going out there and hitting a good floor routine for my team. I wanted to give our team the best opportunity to finish."
Vault
Iowa State started the night on vault and earned a score of 48.850. Haylee Young started her awesome night by scoring a 9.900. Sophia Steinmeyer continued her success on vault scoring a 9.825. Meaghan Sievers scored a 9.775 and Kelsey Paz scored a 9.700. Kelly Martin and Briana Ledesma both scored a 9.650 to start the meet.
Head Coach Jay Ronayne:
"You know, I wasn't that pleased with our landings and that's where the deductions were. So, I believe we are four attempts better than we were today."
Balance Beam
Iowa State scored a 48.725 on beam tonight. Haylee Young tied her career high with an 9.925. Kelsey Paz picked up where she left off at Arizona State earning an 9.825. Freshmen Sophia Steinmeyer and Ariana Orrego scored a 9.775 and 9.750, respectively.
All-Around
Haylee Young placed first in the all-around scoring a 39.450. Kelsey Paz placed second with a 39.050. Both seniors have finished in the top two in all-around in the first two meets.
