AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's (8-11, 2-6 Big 12) late rally was not enough to pull back No. 17 West Virginia (16-4, 3-5 Big 12), as the Mountaineers prevailed 69-59 Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones struggled to find answers to slowing down WVU's Teana Muldrow, who finished with 27 points and 11 rebounds.
ISU's effort was led by 15 points off the bench from Emily Durr, while Bridget Carleton notched 11 points, four rebounds, five assists and five steals. The Cyclones were down by as many as 21 points in the third quarter, but were able to cut the visitors' advantage down to seven in the late minutes.
How It Happened
West Virginia went on a 9-0 run between the end of the first quarter and start of the second quarter to make a two-point game a nine-point contest. The Mountaineers had a dominant second quarter, shooting 58.3 percent from the field and going on an 8-0 run to up their advantage to 16 points at 34-18.
Led by a strong performance off the bench from Emily Durr, ISU was able to narrow the deficit back to 11 at 34-23. The Cyclones carried momentum into the second half, with a Meredith Burkhall jumper cutting the Mountaineers' lead to single digits at 40-31.
However, WVU put the game out of sight after that, going on a 13-1 run to get ahead at 53-32. The Cyclones struggled to find answers to a dominant performance by Teana Muldrow, with the senior notching 14 points in the third quarter to guide the visitors.
ISU was able to work its way back into the contest late on, as a Meredith Burkhall lay-in brought the game back to single digits at 62-53. WVU went 7:12 without scoring, but Chania Ray kept her cool at the charity strip to put the lead back into double digits for West Virginia.
Players of Note
Emily Durr gave Iowa State some quality minutes off the bench, recording 12 first-half points on 4-of-5 shooting. The senior finished the contest with 15 points, two rebounds and two assists.
Bridget Carleton finished the game strong, recording eight of her 11 points in the fourth quarter. Carleton has scored in double figures in every game this season. She also had four rebounds, five assists and five steals.
