Nate Loenser is in his third season with the Iowa State men’s basketball program. Loenser spent the 2013-14 season as a graduate assistant before being promoted to director of player development in July of 2014.
Iowa State went 25-9 overall and won the Big 12 Championship title for the second consecutive season in 2014-15. The Cyclones were 12-6 in conference action, finishing in a tie for second in the league.
For the second time in as many seasons, ISU beat nine ranked opponents. The Cyclones own a nation's-best 18 wins against nationally-ranked foes since the start of the 2013-14 campaign.
Iowa State's potent offense averaged 77.9 points per game to lead the Big 12 Conference for the third season in a row.
Georges Niang became the fourth Cyclone in the last three seasons to earn All-America honors. Niang, Monté Morris and Jameel McKay were recognized on the All-Big 12 teams. McKay was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, the fourth player in as many seasons to take home an individual award.
In 2013-14, Loenser's first season in Ames, Iowa State had one of the best seasons in school history. The Cyclones finished with 28 wins (28-8), the second most in school history, advanced to the Sweet 16 and won the Big 12 Tournament and Diamond Head Classic. Iowa State defeated a school-record nine teams ranked in the Associated Press top-25.
A pair of players, Melvin Ejim and DeAndre Kane, earned All-America accolades for their efforts. Ejim was also named the Big 12 Player of the Year, while Kane took home Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors and was recognized as the most outstanding player at the conference tournament.
The Cyclones led all "power" conferences in scoring with 83.0 points per game (third nationally) and were the nation's leader in assists (18.4). ISU was also second nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.74).
A native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Loenser brought a wealth of experience to Iowa State men’s hoops. He spent six years as an assistant coach at Southern Mississippi for former Cyclone head coach Larry Eustachy from 2004-10.
Prior to his stint at USM, the 2002 Iowa State graduate was the head coach at Northern University H.S. in Cedar Falls. He most recently was the head coach at Spirit Lake H.S. from 2010-13.
Loenser was a member of the Cyclone baseball team, lettering in 2001.
He and his wife, Jackie, reside in Boone.
