- Hired to coach the football team – then on a nation-long 16-game losing streak – after coaching football and basketball at Michigan
- To change the culture, Veenker dressed his team (1931) in blue jerseys with gold numbers (like Michigan) and it worked as the Cyclones beat Simpson in the opener and went on to be Big Six runners-up
- As huge underdogs in 1934 – and amid rumors that Iowa wanted to end the series with ISU – Veenker led his Cyclones to a dominating 31-6 victory using pre-game comments by Hawkeye Coach Ossie Solem to fire up his troops
- Named Athletics Director in 1935, the Cyclones won 12 Big Six Championships in four sports under his leadership
- Spearheaded a campaign to build a campus golf course – designed by famed architect Perry Maxwell – which was named in his honor shortly after his death in 1959
