- Member of Iowa State's NCAA Men's Cross Country runners-up in 1990 and 1991
- Six-time Big Eight champion, including two titles each in the 1,500 and 5,000
- Skipped his senior season to run internationally, and he won the 1996 European Cross Country Championship
- Made three Olympic teams for Great Britain and just missed medaling twice with fourth-place finishes in the marathon in Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004)
