LAIE, Hawaii (AP) - Reserve Zach Fortune hit two big 3-pointers late in the game Friday night and helped Iowa State beat Brigham Young 76-71 in the semifinal round of the Yahoo! Sports Invitational.
Fortune finished with 10 points, but none were more important than his late 3-pointers. Fortune's first 3-pointer came with 5:10 left and gave the Cyclones (9-1) the lead for good. His second came with 4:06 left and ended BYU's comeback bid.
Iowa State went on an 18-0 run midway through the second half and appeared to have control of the game. During the stretch, BYU (7-3) went without a field goal for nearly eight minutes.
But Mekeli Wesley, who finished with 26 points, and Terrell Lyday sparked a rally by BYU, and Trent Whitinghit a 3-pointer that tied it at 59.
Fortune answered with his first 3-pointer. His second came in the midst of a 7-0 spurt, and BYU never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Jamaal Tinsley scored 17 points and Paul Shirley had 14 points and seven rebounds for Iowa State.
Lyday scored 18 points for BYU.
