AMES, Iowa - Iowa State head volleyball coach Linda Grensing announced today that five student-athletes have signed letters of intent to attend Iowa State University in the Fall of 2000.
The five prep signees are represented from four states, including Iowa all-state performers Steph Sunkten (Indianola, 5-11, outside hitter) and Renae Pruess (Clarence, 6-0, outside hitter). Julie Mitchell of Champlin, Minn., Lindsey Chapman of Bowling Green, Ohio and Dana Koziol of Norfolk, Neb., round out the class of 2000.
"This incoming group will augment an already talented young team," Grensing said. "Besides being excellent volleyball players, their list of off the court honors are equally as impressive."

Lindsey Chapman
Was a four-year starter for Bowling Green High ... a three-time Division 1 (large schools) all-Ohio selection ... named third-team all-Ohio as a sophomore and earned second-team honors her junior and senior campaigns ... was also a three-time all-Northern Lakes League, all-District VII and all-Wood County pick ... team won conference championship her sophomore season ... as a senior, was named to the Blocks-n-Kills Magazine Super squad, a list of the top 50 volleyball recruits from around the country ... holds the career school record in aces and ranks second all-time in blocks and kills ... also a standout basketball player, earning all-Northern Lakes League the past two years while averaging a double-double ... holds all of her school's rebounding records ... a National Honor Society member ... has maintained a 4.0 GPA, which ranks No. 1 in her class of 289 ... chose ISU over Kentucky, Bowling Green and Marshall ... coached in high school by Karol Kampe. Grensing on Chapman: "Lindsey is a very versatile athlete and has a good background in the club volleyball system. We are looking to train her as a setter. With her athleticsm, we feel she has the potential to evolve into an excellent collegiate setter."
Dana Koziol
Three-year starter for Norfolk High ... earned honorable mention all-state honors as a junior and senior ... was a first-team all-conference selection as a senior ... team qualified for state all three years as a starter ... also participates in track and basketball, qualifying for state in the 800-meter run ... a two-time National Honor Society member who currently ranks second in a class of 370 ... was a high school teammate of Cyclone Sarah Rollman ... coached in high school by Frank Hebenstreit ... sister, Denise, was a member of the Nebraska volleyball team (1995-98). Grensing on Koziol: "Dana comes from an outstanding high school program. The training that Dana has had in ball-handling technique will be an immediate asset to our program."
Julie Mitchell
Three-year starter and two-time team MVP for Champlin Park ... was first-team all-conference, all-Region, all-metro and all-state as a senior ... team finished 25-3 her senior season en route to the conference championship ... was a Blocks-n-Kills High School Volleyball Yearbook Elite Midwest Region selection in 1999 ... holds career school records in digs, blocks, aces and kills ... a National Honor Society member ... coached in high school by Gina Rollie. Grensing on Mitchell: "Julie is someone whom I believe will blossom athletically at the collegiate level. We are looking to use Julie in the middle because of her quick lateral movement."
Renae Pruess (pronounced PRESS)
A three-year starter, all-conference and all-state selection at North Cedar High ... as a sophomore, earned sixth-team all-state, smacking 202 kills and averaging 1.70 bpg ... was a unanimous first-team all-conference and fourth-team all-state pick as a junior ... in her senior season, was named Big East Conference MVP after tallying 235 kills and 154 blocks ... earned Class 1-A Second-Team All-State by the Iowa Girls' Coaches Association and was selected to play in the Iowa Senior All-Star Classic in Carroll, Iowa ... a National Honor Society member ... chose ISU over Florida State and Wisconsin ... coached in high school by Marilee Oldorf. Grensing on Pruess: "Renae is an exciting young athlete who has relatively little experience in volleyball, but I believe is a sleeper in this year's recruiting class. She definitely has the ability to become a great collegiate player."
Steph Suntken
Was one of the top prospects in the state after leading Indianola to the state semifinals this last season ... pounded 18 kills and tallied five blocks in the state semifinal match en route to Class 3-A all-tournament team honors ... was a 1999 Iowa Girls' Coaches Association First-Team Elite squad member ... earned second-team all-state as a junior ... was an unanimous First-Team all-CIML pick in 1999 ... played in the Iowa Senior All-Star Classic in Carroll, Iowa ... led her team in kills (453) and blocks (121) as a senior ... a National Honor Society member ... chose ISU over Northern Iowa and Drake ... coached in high school by Marcy Earwood. Grensing on Suntken: "Steph is a tremendous athlete who will have an immediate impact on our program. I anticipate Steph will develop into a future leader on the ISU volleyball team."
