WACO, Texas - Ennis Haywood ran for 241 yards and two touchdowns as Iowa State beat Baylor 31-17 on Saturday night to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 1980.
Haywood, who has topped 100 yards in all four victories, had 101 yards and both of his touchdowns by halftime, when the Cyclones (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) already had a 31-3 lead. Iowa State converted three Baylor turnovers into 17 first-half points.
Baylor (2-2, 0-1), which had just three turnovers its first three games, has lost 14 straight Big 12 games. Iowa State has four straight wins in the same season for the first time since 1986.
The Cyclones, who won only their fifth Big 12 game in five seasons, scored on their last three possessions of the first half, including two touchdowns in 39 seconds.
After Joe Woodley plunged in from the 1 to make it 24-3 with 1:37 left, Baylor had the ball back just one play before Guy Tomcheck was intercepted by Dustin Avey. Four plays later, Sage Rosenfels hit J.J. Moses on a crossing pattern, and the receiver completed the 38-yard TD play.
Haywood scored on a 9-yard run to end a 14-play, 61-yard drive earlier in the second quarter. He scored on a 3-yard run in the first quarter, carrying four straight times from the 25 after Baylor fumbled a kickoff return.
Rosenfels was 12-of-23 passing for 167 yards. The Cyclones had 475 total yards, and have had at least 400 yards in every game this season.
Baylor went 80 yards in six plays to start the second half, Tomcheck hitting Reggie Newhouse for a 54-yard touchdown. After an Iowa State fumble on its next drive, the Bears didn't score when Tomcheck's fourth-and-goal pass from the 3 was incomplete.
Tomcheck, the freshman who became the starter when Greg Cicero broke his collarbone on the opening series of the second game, completed 8 of 27 passes for 167 yards.
Darrell Bush's 1-yard TD in the fourth quarter came right after Baylor converted a fourth-and-7 on Tomcheck's 21-yard pass to Elijah Burkins.
Iowa State led 10-0 after converting two Baylor fumbles into points.
After Jonathan Golden's fumble was recovered by Ryan Harklau, Iowa State had to settle for a 3-0 lead when Mike McKnight kicked a 20-yard field goal. Elijah Burkins then fumbled the kickoff return for Baylor, setting up Haywood's first TD.
