BOULDER, Colo. - Freshman Katie Jessen had a career-high 12 kills and sophomore Katie Kruenegel added 10 but the Colorado Buffaloes defeated Iowa State, 3-1, Saturday night at the Coors Event Center. With the loss, Iowa State falls to 7-7 and 0-4 in Big 12 play. Allie Griffin led Colorado with 21 kills. CU's record improves to 10-4 overall.
Colorado had the edge offensively, hitting .160 from the floor and collecting 67 kills to Iowa State's 43. The Buffaloes also held the edge defensively, with 69 digs to ISU's 61. However, the Cyclones held a big advantage in blocking, tallying 30 total blocks to CU's 15. Sophomore Ashlie McWee had a career-high eight block assists and added a solo block. Senior Renae Pruess had eight total blocks for ISU.
Games one and two were close throughout, but Colorado pulled away in each of the games to win game one, 30-22, and game two, 30-21. Game one was tied at 20, before the Buffaloes scored six unanswered points to win. In game two, Colorado led, 19-17, when CU scored six-straight points to win game two. ISU had 11 kills to CU's 17 in game one and eight kills to Colorado's 16 in game two.
Game three was Iowa State's game. The Cyclones took advantage of numerous Colorado errors to win a thrilling game three, 34-32. The Buffaloes were leading, 29-27, and forced three-straight attacking errors to put the Cyclones up, 30-29. ISU held CU to -.062 hitting from the floor, while hitting .104.
Colorado proved to be too much in game four, winning 30-19. ISU had 11 kills to Colorado's 19.
ISU will continue Big 12 action on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Texas Tech. First serve is at 7 p.m.
