OMAHA, Neb. - Iowa State (2-0) had 76 digs and recorded 9.5 blocks to defeat Creighton (1-1), 3-0 (30-22, 30-14, 30-27) and win the Bluejay Invitational. Nicole Lorenzen posted her second double-double and was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Katie Churm had a team-high 22 digs and was named the Top Libero of the tournament.
"I am really proud of how the team played tonight," said head coach Christy Johnson. "They really fought hard and I think that is the type of team that we are becoming."
Leading 16-14 in the first game, the Cyclones used a 5-0 run to gain control of the game and eventually capture game one, 30-22. The Cyclones hit .235 and had four blocks to control the game.
Iowa State pushed its lead to 2-0 after capturing game two, 30-14, behind a .419 hitting percentage. Nicole Lorenzen had four kills in the second game to lead the Cyclones.
In the third game, Creighton led by as many as five at 13-8 but the Cyclones were able to rally back and tie it up at 21. Following a Bluejay timeout, ISU outscored CU, 9-6 to hold off the Bluejays and capture the game, 30-27.
Lorenzen finished with 16 digs and 12 kills to lead ISU and Katie Jessen posted a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Amanda Craig had 38 assists and Erin Boeve added 10 kills in the match.
Leah Ratzlaff led Creighton with 12 kills in the match.
The Cyclones will be back in action on Friday when they face South Dakota State noon in the Cyclone Invitational.
