AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team defeated South Dakota State and Montana, 3-1, on the first day of action in the Cyclone Classic. The Cyclones (4-0) and Stephen F. Austin are the tournaments only undefeated teams after the first day.
"I was pleased with our performance in the second match," said head coach Christy Johnson. "The girls played hard today and we are happy to come away with a pair of wins."
Against South Dakota State, ISU dropped the first game but rallied back to down the Jackrabbits, 3-1 (28-30, 30-23, 30-23, 31-29). The Cyclones were led by Amanda Craig and Katie Jessen. Jessen had 20 kills and Craig had 55 assists in the match. Nicole Lorenzen had her third double-double of the season with 14 digs and 13 kills.
SDSU was paced by Minette Ridenour, who had 15 kills to lead the Jackrabbit attack.
The Cyclones out hit the Jackrabbits, .256 to .216 and had three more blocks in the match to set the tone at the net.
In the nightcap, Jessen posted a career-high 25 kills while Craig fell one short of her career-high with 63 assists, to help the Cyclones to a 3-1 (30-19, 31-29, 27-30, 30-16) win over Montana. Erin Boeve finished with 17 kills and Meghan Ferrie got into double-digits with 11 kills. Katie Churm led four Cyclones in double-figures with 22 digs.
Montana's Claudia Houle had 20 kills and 19 digs while Audrey Jensen chipped in 12 digs to lead the Grizzly attack.
In the match, ISU hit a season-high .268 while holding the Grizzlies to a .129 hitting percentage. The Cyclones also controlled the net, out blocking Montana 13-8.
The Cyclones will be back in action Saturday afternoon as they host Drake at 2 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. match against Stephen F. Austin.
