Iowa State true freshman wrestler Jonathan Reader has been named the winner of the 2005-06 Junior Schalles Award by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. The Junior Schalles award is presented annually to America's best scholastic pinner. He is the second straight ISU wrestler to earn the award.
Reader, a Davison, Mich. native, claimed three state titles (2004 - 135 pounds; 2005 - 152 pounds; 2006 - 160 pounds) and tallied a 234-6 prep career record. He capped off his high school career by going 60-0 in his final season, claiming victory by pin 56 times. Also during his senior year, he tied the Michigan state record of consecutive pins with 54 straight victories by fall.
Reader will be honored for his accomplishments during the 2007 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Auburn Hills, Mich. in March.
Reader joins a prestigious list of previous winners including current Cyclone redshirt freshman, Jake Varner, who earned the award after the 2004 – 05 season.
