ISU Faces No. 13 OSU and OU in Oklahoma

AMES, Iowa-- The Cyclones continue Big 12 Conference action on the road this weekend in Oklahoma. Iowa State faces No. 13 Oklahoma State at Stillwater, Okla., on Friday. Game time is set for 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Cyclones travel to Norman, Okla., for a 1 p.m. match against Oklahoma.

The Cyclones have a 2-1 start in the Big 12 season, after beating Nebraska and Texas Tech. This is the best ISU record since the 1999 season, when the team also started 2-1. In 1999, the team began with a 1-2 loss to Baylor in double-overtime, a 4-0 win vs. Texas Tech and a 3-0 win at Texas. They went on to finish the season with a 4-6-0 conference mark.

Scouting the Cowgirls
Last weekend, No. 17 Oklahoma State fell to eighth-ranked Texas A&M and ended the weekend beating No. 11 Texas in a tough weekend on the road. OSU's Kasey Landon scored the game-winning goal in the Cowgirls' 1-0 victory over UT. In its best conference start in program history, OSU is 4-1 in the Big 12. Currently, the Cowgirls are tied with Texas A&M for the conference lead. OSU has never won more than four Big 12 games in a season and has never finished higher than seventh in the conference standings. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Stigler was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 26, for her performance in wins over No. 11 Colorado and Kansas. She holds a 3-1 record in Big 12 contests this season with a total of 13 saves in four conference matches. The OSU midfield attack is lead by Yolanda Odenyo and Ashlyn Brantley with two goals apiece in conference play. Odenyo was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 26, for her play in wins over Kansas and No. 11 Colorado. The same week, she was also named to the National Team of the Week by Soccer Buzz Magazine and Soccer America. Senior forward Jesyca Rosholt leads the team with 46 shots on the season.

Scouting the Sooners
Oklahoma enters the weekend 0-4-1 in Big 12 Conference play after falling last weekend to eighth-ranked Texas A&M and trying No. 11 Texas. The match against UT ended in a 3-3 draw. OU scored two second half goals by freshman Daphne Fitzpatrick and senior Kade Kelly. Kelly is the leading scorer in the OU offense with 23 shots and four goals this season. OU junior goalkeeper Jennifer Nichols (3-8-1) made fives saves against Texas and has 22 saves in conference action. On the season, Nichols has three shutouts, 57 saves, and averages 4.75 saves per game.

ISU Freshmen Shutout History

Last weekend, freshman goalkeeper Ann Gleason earned the third shutout of her career against Texas Tech. In her young season, she is already the first Iowa State freshman goalkeeper to earn three shutouts in a season since Karen Hasselman in 2001. In her first season as a Cyclone, Hasselman finished the season with three shutouts and 1426:17 minutes in goal. Beth Champman, whose freshman season was in 2000, holds the record for freshman goalie shutouts with a season total of four and 1520:34 minutes in goal.

Weekend in Review

The Cyclones traveled to Waco, Texas, to battle the Baylor Bears last Friday night, falling 3-0. Junior co-captain Brittanie Waddell had two shots on goal for the Cyclones. Freshmen Elise Reid and Amanda Nimtz and junior co-captain Stephanie Kaphingst, added two shots apiece to the team's 12 shots in the match. Iowa State goalkeeper Ann Gleason had seven saves on the night. The Cyclones returned home to beat Texas Tech 1-0, improving to 2-1 in the Big 12 Conference on Sunday. Freshman Lauren Odino scored her third goal of the season had had five shots. Goalkeeper Ann Gleason had seven saves in the shutout, her third of the season.

Odino Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week
Iowa State freshman forward Lauren Odino was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week by the Big 12 Conference on Sept. 26. The honor came after she scored a goal and added the game-winning assist in the Cyclones' two wins the previous week. Against North Dakota State, she posted her second career goal and helped lead ISU to a 2-0 victory. ISU also came from behind to defeat Nebraska in the Cyclones' Big 12 opener. Trailing 2-1 with 52 seconds remaining, Odino went after a pass looking for the game-tying goal when she was fouled. After a penalty kick sent the game into overtime, she assisted the game-winning tally at the 109:39 mark. Currently, Odino is second on the team in goals (three) and points (seven).

After two road games this weekend, the Cyclones return home to the ISU Soccer Complex. ISU plays host to Kansas on Friday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m., and Colorado on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m.
