BOULDER, Colo. – For just the second time this season, Iowa State (4-2-2, 1-1-0 Big 12) conceded more than one goal, falling to Colorado (7-1-2, 1-0-1 Big 12) on the road in its first away conference match of the season, 3-1.
The Cyclones were unable to extend their three-game win streak, the team's longest since 2016, as it ran into Colorado star Hope Leyba, who recorded a hat trick to power the Buffs to victory.
Morgan Goodman scored the lone goal for the Cyclones in the 82nd minute, cashing in on her only shot attempt of the night. Both Megan Walters and Erin Hopewell were the only Cyclones to attempt multiple (2) shots on the evening. Kasey Cannistraro picked up four saves in the net for the Cyclones.
For Colorado, the aforementioned Leyba was the star. The forward recorded her second hat trick of the season, making her the first Buffalo in school history to do so, on four shots. Four Buffs had assists on Leyba's scores. In the net, Jordan Nytes picked up three saves.
Iowa State's goal in the 82nd minute snapped a long shutout streak for the Buffs. Goodman's goal was the first allowed by Colorado since Sept. 7 at Wisconsin.
Colorado held the shot advantage, 17-10, and corner kick advantage, 11-2, on the night. ISU tallied more saves (4-3) as the two squads were tied with 11 fouls.
How it Happened
Iowa State found itself the aggressor early on the road, ripping off three shots in the first 12 minutes, with two being blocked in the box and the third being saved. Colorado got its first good chance in the 16th minute with its first shot of the game being blocked before being recontrolled by the Buffs.
After repossessing the ball, Ava Priest fed a ball into the box to the nation's leading goal-scorer, Hope Leyba, who headed it in to give the Buffs a 1-0 lead in the 17th tick.
The Cyclones kept finding themselves in advantageous spots, rattling off four more shots in the ensuing 10 minutes of play. In the 37th minute though, it was Leyba again, hustling against a double team to net her second score of the game and making it 2-0.
At the break, the Buffs led 2-0 despite trailing in shots (8-4) and shots on goal (3-2).
It was more of the same in the second half, as Leyba did it again, scoring in the 53rd minute to make it 3-0.
The Cyclones kept working, eventually breaking the goose egg in the 82nd minute off a set piece goal by Goodman who buried it into the top right corner of the net.
Fannon's Thoughts
"We were really excellent tonight and seserved so much more from the match. We had two moments of hesitation inside our box and it was ultiamtely the difference. But once again, we see just how capable we are of competing in this incredibly high-level league. We'll bounce back and be ready for Sunday."
