“I really felt that the match was won with serve and pass and I thought we did a really good job of that tonight,” said ISU head coach Christy Johnson. “It was important that we handled their jump serves as well as we did.”
The Cyclones (7-4, 1-0 Big 12) hit .212 as a team and got 13 kills each from Mary Bisenius and Lauren Cummings and 11 from Jen Malcom in the win. Freshman Ashley Mass had 17 digs in the win while Erin Boeve and Amy Vos chipped in 10 each. The Cyclones were out blocked 12.5 to 12, but held the edge in digs at 60-56.
“Mary (Bisenius) and Lauren (Cummings) had big matches for us tonight,” said Johnson. “I think they really got going early in the first game and set the tone for the night.”
Baylor (7-4, 0-1) was paced by Haley Thomas, who had 12 kills in the loss. Sarah Grace had a match-high 25 digs for the Bears.
The Cyclones held off a late Baylor rally in the second game to take the 30-27 win and go ahead 2-0 heading into the break.
Iowa State took a 10-3 lead out of the gate in game three but again had to fight off a late Baylor rally that forced extra play. After ISU led 28-20, Baylor was able to tie it up at 29-29. The Cyclones used a kill by Bisenius and an ace by Mass to earn the sweep.
The Cyclones will open Big 12 home play on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum when they face Texas A&M. First serve is slated for 6:30 p.m. with free admission to anyone with a ticket stub from the Iowa State/Iowa football game.
