“We played well in the second half,” said first-year coach Wendy Dillinger. “It was much better than how we played in the first half. But we still need to score more goals.”
The Sooners grabbed the early lead as sophomore forward Whitney Palmer added to her team-high goal mark (8) with the opening tally off a penalty kick in the eighth minute. Palmer's goal marks the first time ISU has conceded a penalty kick this season.
The 1-0 score line held at the end of the first half. The two squads were equal on shots (6), shots on goal (2) and corner kicks (1) at the intermission.
Iowa State came out of the locker room in the second frame firing. Senior forward Leslie Hill hit a shot off a cross bar 1:55 into the half. The Cyclones continued their onslaught on the Oklahoma goal and it paid off at the 68:12 mark when junior forward Elise Reid notched her team-best fourth goal. Freshman midfielder Laura Wooster provided the assist, her third of the campaign.
“Elise (Reid) played well and scored a nice goal,” Dillinger said.
The Sooners answered with 10:03 remaining. Ashley Farrard scored her first goal of the season off a Jordan White assist to give the Sooners the win.
For the match, ISU had a 20-12 shots edge and led in corners 8-1. Reid and sophomore midfielder Jordan Bishop each had a team-high four shots.
Dillinger felt some of her freshmen that saw significant playing time performed well.
“Emily Hejlik played out of her mind,” Dillinger said. “Rachel Brcic and Laura Wooster also did well.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Costanzo made her first collegiate start and went the distance, making four saves.
The Cyclones close out their season Friday at the ISU Soccer Complex against Nebraska at 7 p.m. The match will also serve as senior night.
