AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State gymnastics team used a strong showing at the Big 12 Championship to vault themselves into the NCAA Regional Championship April 12 at 5 p.m. in Happy Valley. Penn State is set to host the regional. Live stats will be available at cyclones.com
The top 36 teams in the nation qualify for regionals, with six teams being placed in six different regions. The No. 1 seed in Iowa State's region is Georgia, the top-ranked team in the nation. Auburn, Denver, Penn State and BYU will also compete against ISU. The top two teams from each region advance to the National Championship meet which will be held April 24-26 at Georgia in Athens, Ga.
“I like the teams we are paired with,” ISU head coach Jay Ronayne said. “They will put us to the test. This meet will give us the chance to rise to the occasion against some strong competition.”
The Cyclones finished second at the Big 12 Championship meet in Norman, Okla. on March 29, shattering their previous season-high with a score of 195.775. That beat their previous high score by .6 of a point. Iowa State held a lead with just one gymnast, Big 12 Gymnast of the Year Kiara Redmond-Sturms of Oklahoma, remaining. Redmond-Sturms was given a 9.950 on her vault, good enough to get the ninth-ranked Sooners past the Cyclones.
Jasmine Thompson led Iowa State with a third-place finish in the all-around competition. Her all-around total of 39.275 was a season-high and included a third-place showing on bars. Megan Barnes finished third on the vault with a 9.900.
This is the 12th consecutive regional appearance for the Cyclones and the 13th in school history.
