LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Iowa State tennis team was defeated by the Kansas Jayhawks, 7-0, on Sunday. The Cyclones finished the regular season with a mark of 4-14. They went winless in the Big 12 this season, going 0-11 in conference dual matches. Kansas moved to 9-12 on the season, with a conference record of 5-6.
In doubles, the Jayhawks' Elizaveta Avdeeva, a senior from Obninsk, Russia, became Kansas' all-time leader in Big 12 doubles victories, teaming with Edina Horvath to defeat ISU's Kara Hickey and Chrissy Derouin, 8-4. Avdeeva and Horvath are 13-8 in doubles play this year.
At No. 2 doubles, Lauren Hommell and Kunigunda Dorn defeated Alyssa Palen and Caitlin Loprinzi, 8-4. At the No. 3 spot, Yuliana Svistun and Magdalena Tokarczyk were victorious over Liza Wischer and Reka Kelemen, 8-1.
"It was an interesting match," said ISU assistant coach Armando Espinosa. "We came out with a good energy and good enthusiasm and did a lot of good things. We were just unable to string wins together in order to take matches that we were in."
In singles competition, Tokarczyk defeated Hickey, 6-0, 6-4. At the No. 2 slot, Avdeeva defeated Loprinzi, 6-3, 6-2. The No. 3 match was won by Kansas' Horvath over Palen, 6-3, 6-0. At No. 5 singles, ISU's Kelemen was upended by Hommell, 6-0, 6-4.
At the No. 6 spot, Derouin, a senior, won the first set, 6-3, and took the second set to a tiebreaker, but lost it to Stephanie Smith. Smith won a tiebreaker in place of a third set, 10-6. A tiebreaker was played since Kansas had already secured a victory over Iowa State.
"I thought Chrissy put herself in a great position in her singles match," said Espinosa. "Chrissy did a good job today, as did Reka and Kara. Both Reka and Kara came out and played good second sets, but were unable to capitalize on opportunities."
The Cyclones finished the regular season in last place in the Big 12. They will be the 12th-seed at the Big 12 tournament, which starts on Thursday, April 24, in College Station, Texas.
