Cyclones Hold Off Kansas, 2-1

LAWRENCE, Kan. ? Rachel Zabriskie tossed a three-hitter and Amanda Bradberry delivered a two-out run-scoring single in the fifth inning as Iowa State defeated Kansas, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark.

The Cyclones (28-27, 4-13 Big 12) out hit Kansas (36-18, 6-11) eight to three in the game and got a homer and a double from Alex Johnson. Kelsey Kidwell also finished with a pair of hits and Courtney Wray laced her fourth triple of the season.

Rachel Zabriskie picked up the win for the Cyclones to improve to 14-12 on the season. The 14 wins are the most by a Cyclone pitcher since 1988. Zabriskie also had four strikeouts in the game.

The Jayhawks got on the board in the second inning when Liz Kocon stole home on a pickoff of Amanda Jobe. Kocon had reached on a leadoff double and advanced to third on a wild pitch by Zabriskie.

Johnson tied it up for the Cyclones two innings later with her fifth home run of the season, a solo shot off to left field off KU starting pitcher Valerie George.

ISU took its first lead of the game in the fifth inning on Bradberry's two-out hit that plated Carleigh Berry. Berry reached on a pinch hit single to lead off the inning before being advanced to second on Kristy Olsen's sacrifice bunt.

That was all the scoring the Cyclones would need as Zabriskie held the Jayhawks to just one hit after Kocon's second double of the game in the fourth inning.

Kansas got a two-out single from Jobe in the seventh inning but Zabriskie was able to get Addy Lucero to ground out to first base and snap the Cyclones' seven-game Big 12 losing streak.

George (18-10) took the loss for Kansas, allowing two runs on eight hits while tossing the complete game.

Kocon had two of Kansas' three hits in the contest, both of which were doubles.

The Cyclones and Jayhawks will meet again Sunday. First pitch is slated for noon.
