This week, 2007 all-Big 12 selection Elise Reid gives a detailed description of a normal day for her. The junior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa also recaps a 2-0 weekend for the soccer squad and visits to players' houses.
Cyber CY'd with Elise Reid
Our team has seen a bunch of changes with the new coaching staff that has arrived since last season. But one thing has managed to stay the same; a BUSY schedule. With the exception of Mondays, our typical day off, we have morning workouts at either 6:45 a.m. or 7:45 a.m., depending on each individual's class schedule. After workouts, we head to class for the day, which usually runs until about noon or 1. A quick lunch (or a nap if I'm lucky) is next on my list. If you are injured, you have to go to treatment next which is an hour and 15 minutes before practice.
Our injury list ranges from Achilles tendonitis, surgeries from the summer, ankle sprains, to just little blisters. Then comes practice; a typical practice starts off with a warm up, then keep away for about 30 minutes, followed by specific drills for our positions. We end with an intrasquad scrimmage. We occasionally will have to ice bath after practice for 15 minutes. This is probably the worst part of my day, even though it really helps. Next, depending on each person's grades from the past semester, we have study hall. I have four hours this semester which really isn't that bad and it helps me get my studying done which is a great thing. Then I get to go home and eat and fall asleep to my favorite show. This, my friends, is a typical day for Elise Reid, #10.
I also want to tell you all about our winning weekend. We started off with a very long bus ride Thursday morning. We left at about 11 a.m. and got to Catch's (freshman Amanda Cacciatore) house at about 7 p.m. The traffic through Chi town made it SO much longer than it should have been. But we finally made it there and got to eat delicious Olive Garden with some amazing desserts. After Catch's house we got to the hotel and headed to bed.
The next morning (game day) we woke up and got ready for our game! I think we came out a little flat in the first half, but we had a very motivating halftime speech and came back with three unanswered goals. It was sweet. Right after the game we headed back to Ames so we could sleep in our own beds for the night.
Saturday was awesome because we actually got to go to a football game, I think we only get to go to one or two more. On Sunday, we took off to defeat the UNI Panthers 2-0. I thought this game was very frustrating. We created so many opportunities, but just couldn't capitalize on them. The good thing is that it is so early in the season we can reflect on what needs to be improved and fix it.
The next part is the best part of the whole weekend! We got to go down to my house in Cedar Rapids for dinner and a movie!! My amazing parents, Ellen and Tom, made the whole team and staff dinner that consisted of spaghetti, lasagna, enchiladas, salad, fruit salad (which was the best EVER), brownies, chocolate chip cookies, and Rice Krispies treats. It was such a good dinner and it was so good to see my family! I was sad to leave but I was really tired so I wanted to get back to Ames to go to sleep! This was a really great weekend for the whole team and I especially liked it because I got to go home!!
I really hope to see you all out at our first home game against DRAKE, Friday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m.!!
