AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State shot 61.5 percent from the floor and Marquis Gilstrap registered his second double-double with 18 points (7-9 FG) and 10 rebounds in a 84-53 victory over Tennessee State Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
It marks the first time ISU shot above 60 percent from the field in a game since Feb. 17, 2004 (Georgia, 74.4 percent), as ISU remains unbeaten at 5-0. The 20-point margin of victory marks just the third time in school history where ISU won five-straight games by 20 points or more.
"What I am excited about is that we haven't scratch our potential," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "Obviously, we are shooting the ball at a very high level. Guys are taking shots that are good for them."
A torrid start by the Cyclones was instrumental in the home team building a 21-8 lead with 11:10 left before the break. ISU made its first 10 shots from the field to start the game, including three from Gilstrap.
Gilstrap and Diante Garrett were getting into the teeth of the paint to combine for 16 of ISU's first 28 points, as ISU held a 28-11 lead at the 8:08 mark of the first half.
ISU largest lead in the first half was 20 points on three occasions. TSU's Josh Sain scored the final five points of the first half to cut ISU's lead to 40-26 at the break. Gilstrap led ISU with 11 points and six rebounds in the opening period.
The Cyclone lead ballooned to 33 points with 12:27 left in the game thanks to a 25-6 run to open the second half.
Scott Christopherson came off the bench to tally 10 points behind a pair of treys. Christopherson, who is the only Cyclone to score in double figures in all five games, has made two or more treys in every game this year.
Garrett finished the game with 11 points and seven assists, handing out five or more dimes in all five games. Craig Brackins added 12 points and five boards in the win.
The game was a part of the Chicago Invitational. ISU will play the third round of the Chicago Invitational on Friday (Nov. 27) vs. Saint Louis at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago.
