"We did not respond defensively at the start of the second half," ISU head coach Greg McDermott said. "OSU really set the tone by putting its shoulder down and getting to the basket. At the same time we had four wide open shots from 3-point range and we could not knock them down."
Iowa State raced out to a 15-5 lead thanks to a 6-of-9 effort from the floor in the first five minutes of the game. Lucca Staiger and Bryan Petersen both buried treys to kickstart the Cyclone offense.
OSU got right back into the game with a 10-0 run to tie the score at 15-15 with 12:40 remaining in the opening period. James Anderson tallied eight points in the run behind a pair of 3-pointers.
ISU held a brief lead at 22-17, but the Cowboys rattled off seven-straight points to take a 24-22 lead with 6:03 left before the half. ISU went almost six minutes without a hoop until Dominique Buckley knocked down a trey from the corner to knot the score at 26-26 with 3:50 left. However, OSU's Terrel Harris hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push the Cowboys out in front 32-26 at the 2:59 mark of the first half.
ISU closed the half on an 8-4 run to go into the break down 36-34. Craig Brackins tallied six of ISU's eight points in the late rally.
A rocky start at the beginning of the second half doomed the Cyclones. OSU scored the first 12 points of the second period, making 5-of-6 shots from the field. Meanwhile, ISU went ice cold, missing its first five shots and turning the ball over twice to allow the Cowboys to forge ahead 48-34 at the 15:55 mark of the second period.
Brackins finally halted the Cyclones' frigid start with seven-straight points to make it 48-41 with 14:31 left. However, four minutes later the Cowboys had a 12-point lead after Keiton Page scored a lay-up to make it 59-47.
The Cowboys kept their 10-point cushion throughout the next six minutes, converting their free-throws down the stretch. A trey by Page gave OSU an 18-point lead at 83-65 with a little over two minutes left in the contest.
OSU outrebounded the Cyclones, 37-27.
Staiger scored 14 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the floor. Staiger now has 60 3-pointers on the season to tie for 10th on ISU's single-season list.
ISU travels to Kansas on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
