LAWRENCE, Kan.- The Iowa State swimming and diving team made up ground from its day one performance but still fell to Kansas 182-113 at Robinson Natatorium Saturday.
The Cyclones did not repeat their slow start on Friday, with juniors Frances Calzada and Lindsey Behrens finishing second (24.40) and third (24.50), respectively, in the 50 freestyle.

“I was pleased with how we got up this morning and raced early,” said head coach Duane Sorenson. “It is a good sign for the Big 12 Championships when we perform well early.”
In the 150 breaststroke, senior Marni Benson, sophomore Jeli Nixt and senior Krista Moyer finished second (1:43.85), third (1:47.39) and fourth (1:48.39). Sophomore Jenny Vondenkamp finished second in the 400 freestyle (4:01.28).
“I thought Marni Benson did really well in the 150 breaststroke,” said Sorenson. “She swam the race just the way we wanted her to. Then Jenny got after her 400 free and Lindsey Behrens did a nice job anchoring the 200 free relay.”
In the final event of the day, the ISU team of junior Abby Glaser, Calzada, Benson and Behrens finished third (1:37.19).
Junior diver Tien Tran could not continue her victorious run in diving, finishing second with a score of 254.70 in the 1-meter. Senior Kali Fryklund took fifth place (233.85) and freshman Jenn Botsch ended up in sixth (210.75).
“We did not come out ready to go and we did not look ready to go,” said diving coach Jeff Warrick. “We talked about that as a team. Everybody today could have done a better job. Abby (Christensen) was feeling sick and Kali hit the board with her foot last night so that affected us.”
Warrick did acknowledge that competing against Kansas's divers would help them for the Big 12 Championships.
“I think it does help them for what is to come,” said Warrick. “They have to be ready to go so I think that is what we are going to be focusing on the next couple of weeks in practice. The divers need to start making the changes I ask them to make.”
The Big 12 Championships begin Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. in Columbia, Mo. The Cyclones edged out Nebraska for fifth place last season.
