OMAHA, Neb.?110 minutes of soccer could not decide a victor between Iowa State and Creighton Friday evening at Morrison Stadium, as the two squads settled on a 0-0 draw.
The Cyclones (0-0-1) had their chances to put away a winner in the match but ISU could not fire the decisive strike. Freshman Jordan Wagner led Iowa State with four shots, while redshirt senior Elisa Berzins chipped in three.
Cyclone goalkeeper Ann Gleason made five saves on the evening. The Stillwater, Minn., native made arguably her strongest intervention in the first half when she stopped a chip attempt. Gleason then scrambled back to the goal line to beat an onrushing Bluejay from redirecting the bouncing ball into the net. For Gleason, the clean sheet marked her 12th career shutout in Cardinal and Gold, a program record.
“Ann did a great job all night,” head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “She covered everything well and came up big when she was needed.”
Dillinger also felt as though the Cyclones had their opportunities and are showing better than at this time a year ago.
“We had good opportunities to go ahead as we created good scoring chances,” she said. “We were getting our shots and forcing corner kicks tonight, which is what we want. Overall, I feel like we are in a good spot, and I can see improvement from where we were a year ago.”
The score line echoed the statistics in the match, as Creighton held a slim 17-14 shots edge. ISU had six shots on goal to Creighton's five, while the two teams were level on corner kicks (4).
Iowa State and Creighton battled to a closely contested 0-0 halftime stalemate. The Cyclones took a 6-5 shots advantage into the break, while the two squads were deadlocked in shots on goal (2) and corner kicks (2).
The Cyclones had perhaps their best opportunity of the opening frame in the 12th minute when Wagner sprung loose via a through ball. Bluejay goalkeeper Alicia Montgomery parried Wagner's low strike out for an ISU corner.
Iowa State will head back to Ames for a four-match homestand. The Cyclones' first home game is Friday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. against South Dakota State at the ISU Soccer Complex.
