AMES, Iowa- Iowa State men's basketball player Royce White has been denied a waiver to compete in 2010-11 by the NCAA, the Iowa State Athletics Department announced today. Iowa State is, however, appealing the decision. Iowa State's appeal will be sent to a committee of faculty representatives and athletic directors.
White, a 6-8 forward from Minneapolis, Minn., is ineligible under NCAA transfer rules and this ruling means he would sit out the 2010-11 season. White enrolled at the University of Minnesota for his freshman campaign in 2009-10. He announced his decision to transfer to Iowa State on July 12.
"We are disappointed in the decision but we will start the appeal process immediately," Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg said. "We will exhaust every option available to try and restore Royce's eligibility. Royce is disappointed as well, but he is appreciative of our intent to appeal the decision."
White was ranked as the 19th-best player nationally by Rivals.com and Scout.com ranked him as the 10th-best power forward in the country in the class of 2009. He was named Minnesota's Mr. Basketball in 2009 after leading Hopkins High School to an undefeated 31-0 mark and Class 4A State Championship. White was one of 20 preps selected to play in the prestigious Jordan Brand Classic in 2009.
