CLEVELAND, Ohio ? Iowa State wrestlers of past and present concluded a strong showing at the 2010 ASICS U.S. Open and the ASICS FILA Junior Nationals in Cleveland State's Wolstein Center Saturday night and Sunday. Five Cyclones notched top-eight finishes in their respective weight classes at the Senior event. Cyclone 174-pounder Chris Spangler took second place in Junior-level tournament.
Trent Paulson (74 kg/163 pounds) and Jake Varner (96 kg/211.5 pounds), both past NCAA champions for ISU, fell in the event's final session to take runner-up honors. Paulson was turned away by Wisconsin's Andrew Howe, 7-0, 0-1, 2-6. Varner dropped to former Ohio State wrestler J.D. Bergman, 1-0, 0-2, 0-5. Both grapplers went 3-1 in the tournament.
Former Cyclones David Bertolino (84 kg/185 pounds) and Travis Paulson (74 kg/163 pounds) took third-place in their respective divisions. Bertolino scored five victories in the tournament, including opening and closing wins over Oklahoma State's Chris Perry. Paulson ended the event with a decision over former Northern Iowa wrestler Moza Fay, 4-1, 1-0.
David Zabriskie, the 2010 NCAA heavyweight national champion for ISU, placed eighth at 120 kg (264.5 pounds).
The top six in each weight of the U.S. Open automatically qualify for the World Team Trials in Council Bluffs, Iowa, June 10-12.
In the ASICS FILA Junior Nationals event, redshirt freshman Spangler (74 kg/163 pounds) scored a runner-up finish for the second-straight year. Spangler went 4-1 in the tournament, falling in the final session to Ethen Lofthouse of Iowa, 1-1, 0-4. ISU freshman Ben Cash also participated in the Junior-level tournament.
