Completed Event: Track and Field at 44 Farms Team Invite on April 11, 2025 ,

05.13.2010 | Track and Field
IRVING, Texas – Iowa State distance runner Brandon Rooney already had his college degree before last weekend's commencement exercises. He has already graduated with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology. Currently, he is enrolled in the master's program at ISU. The Techachipi, Calif. native is one of 38 members of the Cyclone men's and women's track teams named to the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Conference Track and Field team.
Rooney's membership on the honorary squad is nothing new. He and teammate Kiel Uhl have made the Big 12 all-academic first team six times. Rooney has had a good season, including being an important part of ISU's cross country program. The graduate student came through at the Big 12 indoor meet in February, placing fourth in the mile and third in the 1,000-meter run. Outdoors, he had a 3:59.9 1600-meter split while anchoring the Cyclones' runner-up distance medley at the Drake Relays in April.
Cyclone head coach Corey Ihmels is obviously glad Rooney returned for one final season.
“We talked about it last season,” Ihmels said. “Brandon did not have to come back but he chose to compete in his final season of eligibility. He has done a great job for us this season.”
Uhl, an architecture major, is a six-time honoree on the first-team of Academic All-Big 12 in cross country and track. He graduated last weekend. Lisa Koll has earned first-team honors seven times in track and cross country. In total, 11 Cyclones who have earned their bachelor's degrees will compete this weekend at the Big 12 meet.
Erin Penticoff has earned the honors six times.
The Big 12 Conference has named 344 student-athletes to the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Track & Field Team, the league office announced. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team consists of those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
