Five Cyclones Earn ISU Open Titles

AMES, Iowa - A full day of events on day two of the ISU Open brought 29 collegiate personal bests and five individual titles for the Iowa State track and field teams Saturday at the Lied Recreation Center.Â
"Going into the weekend the emphasis was to be competitive and give a great effort as we start the indoor season," Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels said. "I thought we did that today. Meaghan Nelson got out there today and it was good to watch her back on the track. Jordan Andreassen had a great weekend. It was gratifying to see Ian Warner compete like he did."
Andreassen placed in both the long jump and the high jump. Warner finished third in the 60-meter dash.
Many of Iowa State's distance runners returned to the track after recovering from the fall cross country season. Junior Lucy Kennedy, competing unattached, won the women's mile run with a time of 4:48.52, setting a personal best time in the event.
Three-time All-American, senior Hillary Bor took first place in the men's mile run with a time of 4:12.83. The Kenya native beat out Nathan Mesta of Kansas Wesleyan by .08 seconds to take the men's mile title.
Nelson, a junior, captured the women's seeded 3,000-meter run title in her first race since the 2010 outdoor season. After missing the 2010 cross country season to recover from injury, Nelson won the seeded race with a time of 9:42.75, a new collegiate personal best.
Freshman Hannah Willms won the seeded high jump with a height of 5-08.75 as she makes her Cyclone track and field debut.
Danielle Frere came away with the shot put title, throwing 52-01.25, a personal best of over a foot. The junior beat out teammate Laishema Hampton by nearly five feet to win the event.
Iowa State track and field is back in action Jan. 27-29 as they play host to the Bill Bergan Invitational at the Lied Recreation Center.
