Missouri struck first, driving 50 yards in eight plays with a 1-yard TD by Franklin, giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead with 12:03 left in the first quarter. On Iowa State's first possession, Jantz fumbled at the Cyclone 38-yard line, giving the ball to Missouri. The Tigers responded by taking the pigskin 38 yards into the endzone for a 14-0 advantage with 9:05 left in the first quarter.
The Cyclones put together their first scoring drive on the ensuing possession that was capped by a Zach Guyer 26-yard field goal that made it 14-3 with 4:45 left in the first quarter. Missouri immediately countered. Franklin hit tight end Michael Egnew over the middle, and the Tiger got past the Cyclone secondary and dashed up the middle on a 39-yard pass play. Missouri went ahead 21-3 with 1:33 to go in the first quarter.
Jarvis West's 51-yard kickoff return set up the Cyclones at the Tiger 45-yard line late in the first quarter. However, Iowa State drove to the Missouri 27-yard line where it was stopped on fourth down.
Iowa State linebacker A.J. Klein closed the gap to 28-10 when he returned an interception 78 yards for a touchdown with 10:07 left in the first half. The pick was Klein's third defensive touchdown of his career, equaling the school record previously set by Brent Curvey (2003-06). The return equaled the seventh-longest interception return in school history. Klein finished the game with a season-high 12 tackles to pace the Cyclones.
Iowa State nabbed two additional Missouri turnovers but scored no points off those mistakes and trailed the Tigers 31-10 at the half.
Jared Barnett took over at quarterback for Jantz in the fourth quarter. He threw an interception on his first career pass attempt but then moved the ball on his second drive that Jeff Woody finished with a 13-yard TD jaunt with 12:41 left that was the last score of the game.
Iowa State plays host to No. 20 Texas A&M next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Jack Trice Stadium in a game that will be televised by ABC-TV.
