DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. - Iowa State senior golfer
Nate McCoy captured his second career title in grand fashion on Tuesday. The West Des Moines, Iowa native shot a final-round 72 to run away with medalist honors at the Rees Jones Invitational by a whopping nine shots (210).
Iowa State finished tied for third as a team, carding a 54-hole 900 tally. Kennesaw State won the team title at 894, six shots better than Iowa State.
McCoy, who won his first title last year at the VCU Shootout, was locked in all week. He hit 47 of 54 greens in regulation en route to his 210 (68-70-72) total, tying for the 13th-best 54-hole score in school history.
"I spent a lot of time putting and on my long irons before I got here," McCoy said. "That helped out a lot. It was a real long course and the greens were really big. I just didn't make a lot of mistakes. I had three bogeys and nine birdies, nothing special."
It was the second tournament in a row where a Cyclone was the medalist. True freshman
Scott Fernandez won the VCU Shootout last week, marking the first time Iowa State had back-to-back medalists since 1996 (Jason Knutzon, Billiken Intercollegiate; Chris Peterson, Shocker Classic). McCoy is the first Cyclone to have multiple tournament titles since Jeremy Lyons (2000-04).
"Nate played unbelievable. He put on a clinic," Iowa State head coach
Andrew Tank said. "Today the course was a lot tougher and he just ran away with it. I am very proud of Nate, especially since he struggled a little last week. It was exciting to see us in position. Unfortunately, we did not capitalize. It will give us some things to work on."
Sam Daley aided the Cyclone effort by tying for 15th with rounds of 74-75-76 (225). Fernandez tied for 26th at 229.
Iowa State is back in action, Oct. 11-12 at the Firestone Invitational.
