AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State women's basketball team kicked off the 2011-12 season by defeating the Coe Kohawks, 87-33, in exhibition play Tuesday at Hilton Coliseum. The entire Cyclone lineup played, and they all scored on the evening.
Three Cyclones made it into double figures led by Chelsea Poppens' 14 points and nine rebounds. In her Hilton Coliseum debut, freshman Nikki Moody posted 12 points and a team-high five assists. Anna Prins finished with 11 points and eight boards.
 
The Cyclones shot 35-of-75 from the field, including 9-of-27 from three. Iowa State outrebounded the Kohawks 52-26. Coe was restricted to 13-of-51 shooting from the field and committed 20 turnovers.
 
The Cyclones cleared out the bench late in the second half, allowing all Cyclones to see action. Melissa Youngblut drained her first career shot from three-point range and Elly Arganbright capped off the game with a three with 23 second remaining to bring the Hilton Coliseum crowd of 10,099 to its feet.
 
The Kohawks kept the game close early, keeping the score down to 8-7 in favor of Iowa State. The Cyclones went on an 22-0 run led by five points from Prins to give Iowa State a 30-7 lead with 10:13 to go in the first.
Iowa State was led by Poppens in the first half, with the junior posting 10 points and four rebounds. Prins contributed seven points and six rebounds and Hallie Christofferson and Jessica Schroll each contributed six points. The Cyclones shot 20-of-38 from the field while outrebounding the Kohawks 26-9 in the opening stanza.
 
Coe was led by 12 points off the bench from Mackenzie Reed. Hannah Breitbach led the Kohawks on the glass with six rebounds.
 
The Cyclones wrap up the exhibition season against Rockhurst (Mo.) Sunday at 5:30 p.m. CST at Hilton Coliseum.
