HIGHLIGHTSDES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State was unable to make shots down the stretch as it fell to Drake 74-65 Tuesday night at the Knapp Center. The loss drops Iowa State to 1-1 while Drake improves to 2-0.
After falling behind 66-56, the Cyclones made one last attempt to rally as a
Tyrus McGee three cut the deficit to seven and a
Royce White free throw reduced the Drake lead to six.
Chris Babb cut the deficit in half with a three of his own to make it 66-63 with 1:19 to go. A Rayvonte Rice lay in got the game back to five, but White quickly got it back down to three. Ben Simons put the game out of the reach with a lay-in to make it 70-65.
Iowa State had ample opportunities to get back into the contest with the Bulldogs unable to get its lead past five or six points. Drake made the Cyclones pay with 3:19 to go as a Kurt Alexander drive and finish gave the Bulldogs a 62-54 advantage.
Iowa State's second-half struggles were evident in its 12-for-31 second half shooting performance, including just 4-of-12 from three-point range. White led Iowa State on the night with 21 points and 14 rebounds, his second-straight double-double. Babb and McGee also reached double-figures with 10 points apiece.
Chris Allen and
Scott Christopherson each contributed eight points. Christopherson didn't make a three-point shot in the game, snapping his 35-game streak of making a three. Allen led the Cyclones in assists with seven dimes.
The Cyclones were down 43-37 in the early proceedings of the second half before starting a 7-0 run to regain the lead. The run was started with a White fast break dunk and was capped off by a Babb fast break three-pointer that put Iowa State up 44-43 with 12:27 to go.
Iowa State fell into an early hole against the Bulldogs, being down 18-13 after Rayvonte Rice hit a three-pointer, forcing coach
Fred Hoiberg into a timeout with 9:21 to go in the first half. The Cyclones responded with a 7-0 run capped off by a
Royce White layup to put the Cyclones ahead 20-18. However, the Bulldogs were able to retake the lead and a tip in by Kraidon Woods as time expired gave Drake a 30-27 lead.
Drake was led by Simons' 24 points, including 4-of-7 from three-point range. Rice added 18 and Alexander posted 10. Clarke led the Bulldogs on the boards with eight and Rice added six.
The Cyclones take the court again Sunday when they face Western Carolina at Hilton Coliseum. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 12:30 p.m. CST.
