Osemele Receives The Variety Trophy Award

AMES, Iowa - After a remarkable final season with the Iowa State football team, awards keep rolling in for senior offensive tackle Kelechi Osemele. The Variety Trophy is the most recent addition to his growing list of accolades. The award honors him as Iowa State University's MVP for the 2011 season.
Offensive line coach Bill Bleil commented on this achievement. "Kelechi had an incredible career here as a three-year starter," Bleil said. "Hopefully that will springboard him into his NFL career."
The Variety Trophy is an annual award bestowed by Variety-The Children's Charity. The award goes to the outstanding senior football player from Iowa, Northern Iowa, and Iowa State. Winners are selected by a committee of fans, sports writers, reporters, and celebrities.
The 2011 season marks the return of the Variety Trophy after not being awarded for a number of years. Stanley Reynolds, an active member of Variety, spearheaded the effort to reinstate the award for 2011.
Winners were honored last week at Variety's 27th annual Black Tie Dinner. The event featured Jesse Palmer. The former football player and current ABC/ESPN football analyst presented the Variety Trophies. Over 500 guests attended the event, and proceeds from the evening benefited Iowa children with special needs.
Osemele was unable to attend the event. He was in Alabama for the Senior Bowl.
"I appreciate and am honored to be getting this recognition," Osemele said, "I wish I could have been there."
Osemele was a first-team Sports Illustrated All-American.
