AMES, Iowa – Iowa State celebrated its White Out Night with big plays, a couple of trick plays and a decisive victory.
Rocco Becht scored three times on 1-yard runs, Carson Hansen added two more short plunges for touchdowns and the 14th-ranked Cyclones returned to Big 12 play with a 39-14 victory over Arizona on a pleasant Saturday evening at MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium.
Becht's consecutive games streak of throwing a TD pass ended at 22, but he hit Chase Sowell four times for big gains and finished 14-of-20 for 243 yards against a team that came in leading the nation in pass efficiency defense.
The Cyclones (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) also showed a couple of new wrinkles with tight ends Gabe Burkle and Ben Brahmer. Burkle took a direct snap for a 2-point conversion after ISU's first touchdown and Brahmer lofted a 45-yard pass to Brett Eskildsen after a pitchout from Becht, setting up the Cyclones' final touchdown.
The defense came up with interceptions from Jontez Williams and Jamison Patton, Williams returning his pick 42 yards to set up a first-half TD. Punter Tyler Perkins helped by pinning Arizona (3-1, 0-1 Big 12) at the 7, 14 and 5 with his first three kicks.
Iowa State is 5-0 for the second straight season and the ninth time in program history after its 10th straight victory in a night game. It was coach Matt Campbell's 47th Big 12 victory, tying him for fifth place in league history with Mike Leach (Texas Tech) and Gary Pinkel (Missouri).
Sowell, who transferred in from East Carolina, caught four balls for a career-high 146 yards, hauling in receptions of 43, 32, 52 and 19 yards. He had caught only four passes for 32 yards through the first four games.
Chase Smith, filling in for injured kicker Kyle Konrardy, hit a 34-yard field goal in the game's final minute and added four extra points.
Ahead 22-7 at halftime, the Cyclones marched 75 yards in seven plays to regain the momentum after Arizona scored in the final minute of the opening half. Becht's 52-yard hookup with Sowell took the ball to the Arizona 10 and the junior quarterback squeezed into the end zone four plays later to make it 29-7.
Marcus Neal tipped away an Arizona pass on fourth down to give ISU the ball at the Wildcat 44 and the Cyclones needed just three plays to score. Brahmer's pass to Eskildsen put the ball on the 1 and Becht took it in on the next play for a 36-7 lead that all put sealed Iowa State's 16th victory in the last 19 games.
Arizona, meeting ISU for the first time as a conference rival, added a consolation touchdown on Noah Fifita's 1-yard toss to Tre Spivey. Fifita finished 32-of-48 for 253 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Cyclones thought they caught an early break when Caden Manson recovered an Arizona fumble on the opening kickoff, but the runner was ruled down after a review. The Wildcats' Michael Salgago-Medina missed a 46-yard field goal try on the ensuing drive and Iowa State dominated the rest of the half, other than the final 2 minutes.
Iowa State went 72 yards in nine plays the other direction to get Becht's first touchdown. His perfectly thrown deep ball to Sowell put the ball on the 1 – the original touchdown call was reversed on review – and Becht plowed into the end zone on the next snap. A little trickery on a 2-point conversion made it 8-0, Burkle taking a direct snap and finding a path around left end to tack on the additional points.
The ISU defense then forced a quick three-and-out and the Cyclones got the ball at the Arizona 38 after the Wildcats' Dalton Johnson ran into returner Xavier Townsend before he could field the ball. Six plays later. Hansen bulled in from the 1 and Smith added the extra point for a 15-0 lead.
Williams' interception and long return put the Cyclones in business at the Arizona 30 late in the first half and they wasted no time adding to their lead. Becht hit Brahmer for 27 yards to the 4 and gained a yard on a keeper before Hansen went untouched through the left side from 3 yards out for a 22-0 lead.
Arizona got on the board with Fifita's 9-yard scoring pass to Kris Hutson with 22 seconds left in the half, but ISU led 36-7 before the Wildcats scored again.
Iowa State hits the road for its next two games, playing at Cincinnati next Saturday and at Colorado the following week. The Cincinnati game kicks at 11 a.m. on ESPN2.
