AMES, Iowa – Add another highlight to Iowa State sophomore Scott Fernandez' resume. Golfweek named the Granada, Spain, native to the All-America Second Team this afternoon, making him just the first Cyclone in program history to make one of the top-two All-America teams.
Fernandez competed in 10 collegiate tournaments this season and finished in the top-10 in eight of them, including an individual victory at the Furman Intercollegiate. His 71.27 stroke average sets a new Cyclone single-season mark, and the Spaniard is on pace to break the career mark (Ben Herrera, 72.87) after his first two seasons.
Recording the best season in program history, Fernandez earned his share of awards and honors, garnering All-Big 12 First Team honors and PING Central All-Region accolades. The Cyclone phenom jumped into the national spotlight, ending his sophomore campaign with top-25 individual rankings by both Golfweek (18) and Golfstat (25).
Fernandez joins Chris Baker (HM) and Nate McCoy (HM) as the only All-America selections in program history.
He will begin play in the prestigious Palmer Cup tomorrow.
Golfweek's All-America teams are determined by players' order in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.
